Alois, Hereditary Prince of Liechtenstein, has exercised the powers of the country's head of state as regent since 15 August 2004, when his father, the reigning Prince Hans-Adam II, formally delegated the day-to-day exercise of the monarchy to him while remaining sovereign in title. Born on 11 June 1968, Alois trained at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst and served with the Coldstream Guards before earning a law degree from the University of Salzburg, and alongside his father he championed the 2003 constitutional referendum that expanded the princely veto and judicial-appointment powers he now exercises.
