Robert Anthony Eden, later 1st Earl of Avon, born June 12, 1897, in Windlestone Hall, County Durham, and died January 14, 1977, served as Conservative Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from April 1955 to January 1957, after a long career as Foreign Secretary. His premiership was defined and ultimately ended by the Suez Crisis of 1956, in which Britain, France and Israel invaded Egypt after President Gamal Abdel Nasser nationalized the Suez Canal; under intense American and international pressure the invading forces withdrew, and Eden resigned in January 1957 citing ill health, in what is widely regarded as a major foreign policy humiliation for Britain.
