Anwar bin Ibrahim (born 10 August 1947 in Bukit Mertajam) is Malaysia's tenth prime minister, having assumed office on 24 November 2022 as a member of the People's Justice Party, of which he has been president since 2018, and as chairman of the Pakatan Harapan coalition since 2020; upon becoming prime minister he also appointed himself minister of finance. A graduate of the University of Malaya who led Islamic youth organizations before entering electoral politics, he rose through the ranks of UMNO to become deputy prime minister in 1993, was dismissed by Mahathir Mohamad in 1998, led the Reformasi movement, and was imprisoned on corruption and sodomy charges that were later overturned; he served as leader of the opposition from 2008 to 2015 and again from 2020 to 2022 before winning the 2022 general election.
