Assimi Goita, born November 9, 1983, in Bamako, has led Mali since a 2020 coup that overthrew President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita, first as chairman of the National Committee for the Salvation of the People, then, after briefly serving as interim vice president under Bah Ndaw, through a second coup in May 2021 that gave him full control as interim president. On July 3, 2025, the National Transitional Council he leads voted to let him remain in office for a five-year term, renewable as many times as necessary and without requiring an election, and he assumed the title of President, no longer interim, on July 8, 2025. He has never faced a competitive national election.
