Bassirou Diomaye Diakhar Faye, born March 25, 1980, in Ndiaganiao, M'bour Department, has served as the 5th President of Senegal since April 2, 2024. He ran as an independent candidate in the 2024 election after the original opposition candidate, Ousmane Sonko, was disqualified, and won after the government had attempted to postpone the vote; he took over 54 percent in the first round held March 24, 2024, becoming the first opposition candidate to win a Senegalese election outright in the first round since independence in 1960. After his inauguration he appointed Sonko as Prime Minister.
