Pakistani politician, daughter of prime minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, who became the first woman to lead the government of a Muslim majority country when she took office as prime minister in 1988, four years after a military government executed her father. She served two terms, 1988 to 1990 and 1993 to 1996, both ended early by dismissal on corruption charges that were never proven in court, and spent years in exile before returning to Pakistan in 2007 to contest new elections. She was assassinated at a campaign rally in Rawalpindi in December 2007.
