Cesar Bernardo Arevalo de Leon, born October 7, 1958, in Montevideo, Uruguay, during his father's political exile, has served as the 52nd President of Guatemala since January 15, 2024. He is the son of former president Juan Jose Arevalo and holds a sociology degree from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and a doctorate in philosophy and social anthropology from Utrecht University, having served earlier as Guatemala's deputy minister of foreign affairs and ambassador to Spain and later working on conflict-resolution efforts with Interpeace. After taking part in 2015 anti-corruption protests, he co-founded an analysis group that became the Movimiento Semilla party in 2017 and was elected to Congress in 2019. Running as Semilla's candidate in 2023 from a starting poll position near 0.7 percent, he unexpectedly placed second in the first round with over 600,000 votes, then defeated former first lady Sandra Torres in the August 2023 runoff, becoming the first son of a former Guatemalan president to be elected to the office.
