Boutros Boutros-Ghali was an Egyptian diplomat and academic who served as the sixth Secretary-General of the United Nations from 1992 to 1996, the first person from Africa and the Arab world to hold the post. His single term was marked by the rapid post Cold War expansion of UN peacekeeping, including missions in Somalia, Rwanda and the former Yugoslavia, and by his sharp criticism of the international community's slow response to the 1994 Rwandan genocide; he did not seek a second term after the United States vetoed his reappointment.
