Chalmers Johnson (1931 to 2010) was an American political scientist whose 1982 book MITI and the Japanese Miracle, a study of Japan's Ministry of International Trade and Industry, coined the term developmental state to describe a government that treats rapid economic development as its central organizing purpose through close coordination between state bureaucrats and private industry.
