Chantal Mouffe, born in 1943, is a Belgian political theorist and philosopher who teaches at the University of Westminster. She is best known for her contribution, with Ernesto Laclau, to the development of the Essex School of discourse analysis. A strong critic of deliberative democracy, she advocates a conflict-oriented model of radical democracy. Her collection of essays The Democratic Paradox, published by Verso in 2000, develops the concept of radical democracy that she explored with Laclau in Hegemony and Socialist Strategy.
