Charles III became King of the United Kingdom and fourteen other Commonwealth realms, including Canada, on 8 September 2022, on the death of his mother Queen Elizabeth II. At 73 he was the oldest person to accede to the British throne, having already been the longest-serving heir apparent and Prince of Wales in British history, and was crowned at Westminster Abbey on 6 May 2023. His reign has included a 2024 cancer diagnosis that temporarily suspended his public engagements.
