Chiang Kai-shek led the Kuomintang after Sun Yat-sen's death in 1925, launching the Northern Expedition that unified much of China under Nationalist rule by 1928. He led the Nationalist government through the war against Japan and the Chinese Civil War against Mao Zedong's Communists, and after his defeat in 1949 he withdrew the government to Taiwan with roughly two million Nationalists, ruling there under martial law until his death in 1975. His defeat and retreat gave the Chinese Communist Party the rival government its own founding history defines itself against.
