Clement Attlee led the Labour Party to a landslide victory in the July 1945 general election, defeating Winston Churchill's wartime coalition government at the ballot box and forming a majority Labour government, an ordinary and peaceful transfer of power that took place within months of Britain's victory in the Second World War. As Prime Minister from 1945 to 1951 his government created the National Health Service and expanded the welfare state, nationalizing major industries including coal, rail and steel.
