Philippine politician who became the country's first woman president in 1986 after the People Power Revolution, a nonviolent uprising that ended the twenty year rule of Ferdinand Marcos. She entered politics only after her husband, opposition leader Benigno Aquino Jr., was assassinated in 1983, and ran as the united opposition's candidate when Marcos called a snap election in February 1986 and claimed victory amid widely documented fraud. As president until 1992 she restored democratic institutions and a new constitution while surviving several attempted military coups.
