Dag Hammarskjöld was a Swedish diplomat and economist who served as the second Secretary-General of the United Nations from 1953 until his death in a plane crash in September 1961 while on a peace mission to the Congo. He greatly expanded the political role and independence of the office, developing UN peacekeeping as an instrument during the Suez Crisis and the Congo Crisis, and was posthumously awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, the only person to receive the prize after death.
