Daniel Francisco Chapo, born January 6, 1977, in Inhaminga, Sofala Province, has served as the 5th President of Mozambique since January 15, 2025. The ruling FRELIMO party nominated him as its presidential candidate on May 5, 2024 with 94 percent internal approval, and he won the October 2024 general election with an announced 71 percent of the vote, a result that faced allegations of fraud and irregularities and was followed by widespread protests. He was inaugurated on January 15, 2025 despite that unrest.
