David Lloyd George, later 1st Earl Lloyd-George of Dwyfor, born January 17, 1863, in Manchester, and died March 26, 1945, served as Liberal Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from December 1916 to October 1922, leading the country through the final two years of the First World War. As Chancellor of the Exchequer before becoming prime minister, he had introduced the National Insurance Act 1911, laying groundwork for the British welfare state. He represented Britain at the 1919 Paris Peace Conference and helped negotiate the Treaty of Versailles. He was the last Liberal Party prime minister; the party fell into third-party status soon after his government fell in 1922.
