Denis Sassou Nguesso, born November 23, 1943, has served as President of the Republic of the Congo continuously since October 25, 1997, having also ruled the country from 1979 to 1992 as head of the Congolese Party of Labour. He returned to power at the head of his own militia during the country's 1997 civil war after losing a multiparty election in 1992, and has since been repeatedly re-elected, most recently in March 2026 to a fifth term with over 94 percent of the vote, making him one of Africa's longest-serving heads of state.
