Evariste Ndayishimiye, born June 17, 1968, in Gitega Province, has served as the tenth President of Burundi since June 18, 2020. He joined the CNDD-FDD rebel movement during Burundi's civil war after fleeing law studies at the University of Burundi, later transitioning into the national army as deputy chief of staff and holding several ministerial posts under President Pierre Nkurunziza, whom he succeeded after winning the May 2020 election with about 68 percent of the vote; he was elected chairperson of the African Union for 2026 in February of that year.
