Faure Gnassingbe has led Togo since 2005, first as president from 2005 to May 2025 and, since May 3, 2025, as the country's first President of the Council of Ministers under a new constitution that converted Togo to a parliamentary-style system while allowing him to retain most of the executive powers he held as president. He succeeded his father, Gnassingbe Eyadema, who had ruled Togo for 38 years, and critics have described the 2025 constitutional change as a means of extending his hold on power beyond presidential term limits.
