Felix Tshisekedi has served as the fifth President of the Democratic Republic of the Congo since January 2019. He led the Union for Democracy and Social Progress, the country's oldest and largest opposition party, before winning the December 2018 election, a result that produced the first peaceful transfer of power in the DRC since independence from Belgium in 1960. Initially constrained by a parliament controlled by predecessor Joseph Kabila's coalition, he gradually consolidated power and pursued reforms including mining contract reviews and deforestation commitments.
