Frederik Andre Henrik Christian, born May 26, 1968, at Rigshospitalet in Copenhagen, is King of Denmark, having acceded to the throne on January 14, 2024. The elder son of Queen Margrethe II and Prince Henrik, he became Crown Prince when his mother ascended the throne in 1972, and holds a master's degree in political science from Aarhus University, having also served in diplomatic postings at the United Nations and in Paris and trained across all three branches of the Danish armed forces. He married Mary Donaldson, an Australian marketing consultant he met at the 2000 Sydney Olympics, on May 14, 2004, at Copenhagen Cathedral; their children are Crown Prince Christian, Princess Isabella, and twins Prince Vincent and Princess Josephine. His chosen motto, Forbundne, forpligtet, for Kongeriget Danmark (United, committed, for the Kingdom of Denmark), is the first Danish royal motto since Frederik VII to omit a reference to God.
