Gerald Allan Cohen (1941 to 2009) was a Canadian political philosopher who held the Quain Professorship of Jurisprudence at University College London and later the Chichele Professorship of Social and Political Theory at All Souls College, Oxford. He was known for his work on Marxism and, later, on egalitarianism and distributive justice in normative political philosophy. His 1988 book History, Labour, and Freedom: Themes from Marx revises and expands his earlier Karl Marx's Theory of History: A Defence, published in 1978.
