George Washington (February 22, 1732 - December 14, 1799) commanded the Continental Army and led Patriot forces to victory in the American Revolutionary War against the British Empire, earning him the title Father of His Country. He was unanimously elected the first president of the United States by the Electoral College in 1788 and again in 1792, serving from 1789 to 1797. During his presidency he established a strong, well-financed national government, adopted a policy of neutrality during the French Revolution while supporting the Jay Treaty with Britain, and set enduring precedents for the office including republicanism, a peaceful transfer of power, the title Mr. President, and the two-term tradition. He is consistently ranked among the greatest presidents in American history.
