Gitanas Nauseda, born May 19, 1964, in Klaipeda, has served as the ninth President of Lithuania since July 12, 2019, and was re-elected to a second term on May 26, 2024. An economist and banker by training, with a doctorate in economics from the University of Mannheim, he served as director of monetary policy at the Bank of Lithuania from 1996 to 2000 and as chief economist in the leadership of SEB bankas from 2008 to 2018 before running as an independent candidate in the 2019 presidential election, in which he defeated Ingrida Simonyte with 66 percent of the vote in the second round. He was a member of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union from 1988 to 1991.
