Gustavo Francisco Petro Urrego (born 19 April 1960) served as the 35th president of Colombia from 7 August 2022 to 7 August 2026, the first left-wing president in Colombia's recent history. He founded and led the Historic Pact party, having joined the M-19 guerrilla group at age 17 and been arrested in 1985 before later moving into electoral politics. His presidency faced stalled legislative reforms, fluctuating approval ratings and deteriorating relations with the United States, and he was succeeded after losing the 2026 election, one of the closest in Colombia's history, to Abelardo de la Espriella.
