Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, born January 28, 1950, in Riffa, succeeded his father, Isa bin Salman Al Khalifa, as Emir of Bahrain in 1999 and became the country's first King when he declared Bahrain a kingdom on February 14, 2002. His reign has included constitutional reforms transforming Bahrain into a nominal constitutional monarchy, alongside continuing political tensions, most visibly the 2011 uprising and its aftermath.
