Hassanal Bolkiah has reigned as Sultan of Brunei, the country's head of state, since 1967, making him one of the world's longest-reigning monarchs. He rules as an absolute monarch and also holds the offices of prime minister, finance minister and defense minister, concentrating both ceremonial and executive authority in the sultanate, and is among the wealthiest heads of state in the world.
