Herbert Henry Asquith, 1st Earl of Oxford and Asquith, born September 12, 1852, in Morley, Yorkshire, and died February 15, 1928, served as Liberal Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from April 1908 to December 1916. His government passed the Parliament Act 1911, curbing the House of Lords' veto power after the constitutional crisis over the 1909 People's Budget, and introduced Britain's first old-age pensions and national insurance scheme. He led Britain into the First World War in 1914 and formed a wartime coalition in 1915, but was replaced as prime minister by David Lloyd George in December 1916 amid a wartime political crisis. He accepted an earldom in 1925.
