Ilham Aliyev, born December 24, 1961, in Baku, has served as President of Azerbaijan since October 31, 2003, succeeding his father Heydar Aliyev, and won a fifth consecutive term in the February 2024 election with more than 92 percent of the vote. He has led the New Azerbaijan Party since December 2003, briefly served as Prime Minister earlier in 2003, and worked as First Vice-President of the State Oil Company of Azerbaijan Republic from 1994 to 2003. He holds a doctorate in history from the Moscow State Institute of International Relations, where he later lectured.
