Indian politician, daughter of first prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru, who served as prime minister from 1966 to 1977 and again from 1980 until her assassination in 1984. In June 1975, facing a court ruling that invalidated her own election, she declared a state of emergency that lasted twenty one months, during which civil liberties were suspended, the press was censored, and political opponents were jailed, an episode still cited as the sharpest authoritarian turn in independent India's history. She was assassinated by two of her own bodyguards in 1984 in reprisal for a military operation against Sikh separatists at the Golden Temple.
