Mohamed Irfaan Ali, born April 25, 1980, in Leonora, has served as President of Guyana since August 2, 2020, and was re-elected to a second term after the People's Progressive Party/Civic won the September 1, 2025, general election with 55 percent of the vote. He is the first Muslim to hold Guyana's presidency, previously served as Minister of Housing and Water from 2009 to 2015 and as a member of Parliament, and chaired the Caribbean Community in the first half of 2024, presiding over the country's transformation into a major oil producer following offshore discoveries. He holds a doctorate in urban and regional planning from the University of the West Indies along with several other advanced degrees from British institutions, and was educated at St Stanislaus College in Georgetown.
