Islam Alijaj is a Swiss politician who became the first wheelchair user elected to the Swiss National Council after winning a seat for the Social Democratic Party in the 2023 federal election. Born with cerebral palsy and living with a speech impediment, he overcame a near hopeless position on his party's list to win more than 95,000 write in votes, using text to speech technology to campaign, and is the first person of Albanian heritage elected to the Swiss parliament.
