Javier Diez Canseco Cisneros was a Peruvian politician and human rights activist who served for decades in the Peruvian Congress, first elected to the 1978 Constituent Assembly and remaining one of the most prominent leaders of the Peruvian left until his death in 2013. A longtime member of the Socialist Party of Peru, he faced repeated threats for his human rights advocacy, including a 1997 attack in which armed men fired on his car, and was widely regarded as a leading dissident voice against abuses committed during Peru's internal conflict.
