Javier Pérez de Cuéllar was a Peruvian diplomat who served as the fifth Secretary-General of the United Nations from 1982 to 1991, mediating an end to the Iran-Iraq War and overseeing the UN brokered independence process for Namibia. He later returned to Peruvian politics, running for president in 1995 and serving as prime minister of Peru from 2000 to 2001 during the transitional government that followed Alberto Fujimori's fall.
