Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck, known as the Dragon King, has served as King of Bhutan since December 2006, when his father, Jigme Singye Wangchuck, voluntarily abdicated in his favor. He presided over Bhutan's transition from absolute to constitutional monarchy, including the country's first democratic parliamentary elections in 2008, and continues to serve as head of state under that constitutional framework while the elected government exercises day-to-day executive authority.
