Joao Manuel Goncalves Lourenco, born March 5, 1954, in Lobito, then Portuguese Angola, has served as the 3rd President of Angola since September 26, 2017. The ruling MPLA party named him its top candidate in December 2016 for the August 2017 legislative election, and when the party won a majority of 150 seats he automatically became president under the 2010 constitution's rule that the leader of the winning party's list is elected president. He served as Chairperson of the African Union from February 15, 2025 to February 14, 2026 and was a 2025 Nobel Peace Prize nominee.
