American political philosopher whose A Theory of Justice (1971) proposed justice as fairness: principles of justice that free and equal citizens would agree to from behind a hypothetical veil of ignorance concealing their own position in society. One of the most influential works of liberal political philosophy of the twentieth century. He died in 2002.
