John Stuart Mill

English philosopher and political economist whose On Liberty (1859) argued that the only justification for restricting an individual's liberty is to prevent harm to others, the harm principle. He applied utilitarian reasoning to politics and was an early and prominent advocate of women's suffrage, introducing the first women's suffrage amendment debated in the British Parliament in 1867. He died in 1873.
