Jose Ramos-Horta is an East Timorese statesman and diplomat who became the leading international voice for East Timor's independence during Indonesia's occupation of the territory, work for which he shared the 1996 Nobel Peace Prize. He served as the country's first foreign minister after independence and later as prime minister and president from 2007 to 2012, and returned to the presidency in 2022, the office he currently holds.
