Filipino writer and reformist whose novels Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo exposed abuses of Spanish colonial rule and the church and became a rallying point for Filipino nationalism. He was executed by Spanish authorities in December 1896 for sedition, although he had no direct involvement in the armed Katipunan revolt already under way. His execution convinced many Filipinos that independence, not reform, was the only path forward, and he is honoured as a national hero of the Philippines.
