Julius Maada Bio, born May 12, 1964, in Tihun, Bonthe District, has served as President of Sierra Leone since April 4, 2018, and was re-elected in 2023. A retired brigadier in the Sierra Leone Army, he briefly served as the country's military head of state from January to March 1996 before overseeing a return to civilian rule, and returned to national leadership decades later through the 2018 democratic election. His presidency has introduced free primary and secondary education and abolished capital punishment, and he was elected chairperson of the West African regional bloc ECOWAS in June 2025.
