Kais Saied has served as President of Tunisia since October 23, 2019, and was re-elected to a second term in October 2024. A former constitutional law professor who had no prior party affiliation when first elected, he moved in July 2021 to suspend parliament, dismiss the prime minister and begin ruling largely by decree, actions critics have called a coup against Tunisia's post-revolution constitution and supporters have called a necessary correction of years of political paralysis.
