German philosopher and economist whose theory of historical materialism held that societies develop through stages driven by class struggle over the means of production. He co-authored The Communist Manifesto (1848, with Friedrich Engels) and wrote Das Kapital, foundational texts for socialist and communist movements and parties worldwide. He died in 1883.
