Keiko Sofia Fujimori Higuchi, born May 25, 1975, has served as President of Peru since July 28, 2026, the first woman directly elected to that office. She is the eldest daughter of former president Alberto Fujimori, who governed Peru from 1990 to 2000, and served as Peru's First Lady from 1994 to 2000, taking on the role at age 19 after her parents separated. Following her father's government's collapse amid corruption scandals, she studied business administration in the United States at Stony Brook University, Boston University and Columbia University. She entered elected politics in 2006, winning a congressional seat representing Lima with a record vote total, and has led the Popular Force party, the vehicle of the Fujimorist movement, since 2009. She ran for president in four consecutive elections, in 2011, 2016, 2021 and 2026, losing the first three in narrow runoffs before defeating Roberto Sanchez by roughly 49,641 votes in 2026. Her platform emphasizes free-market economics, conservative social positions and hardline crime policy, and political scientists have characterized her movement as right-wing populism.
