Kimon Georgiev was a Bulgarian army officer and politician who twice came to power through military coups, first as the 24th Prime Minister of Bulgaria from May 1934 to January 1935 after the Zveno group and the Military League overthrew the government of Nikola Mushanov, and again after taking part in the 1944 coup that removed Bulgaria from the Axis alliance. During his first government the constitution was effectively suspended, political parties were banned, and the state imposed direct control over public life; he served again as prime minister in the immediate postwar period before the Communist Party consolidated power.
