King John reigned as King of England from 1199 to 1216. His heavy taxation, military failures in France, and disputes with the church provoked a baronial rebellion, which forced him to seal Magna Carta at Runnymede on 15 June 1215. He repudiated the charter within weeks with papal backing, triggering the First Barons War, and died in 1216 while the war was still underway.
