Lai Ching-te (born 6 October 1959 in Wanli, then part of Taipei County and now New Taipei) is a Taiwanese physician and politician who has served as President of the Republic of China (Taiwan) since 20 May 2024. A member of the Democratic Progressive Party, he previously served as mayor of Tainan from 2010 to 2017, premier of the Republic of China from 2017 to 2019, and vice president from 2020 to 2024. He holds degrees from National Taiwan University and National Cheng Kung University and a master of public health degree from Harvard University. As president he has continued the Democratic Progressive Party's emphasis on Taiwan's self-governance and on relations with other democracies.
