British Conservative politician who served as prime minister from 1979 to 1990, the first woman to hold the office in Europe and Britain's longest serving prime minister of the twentieth century. Her government pursued privatisation, trade union reform, and reduced state spending, a program that came to be called Thatcherism, while her confrontation with Argentina over the Falkland Islands in 1982 and her hard line toward the Soviet Union, which nicknamed her the Iron Lady, defined her foreign policy. She resigned in 1990 after a challenge from within her own party and died in 2013.
