English writer and moral and political philosopher whose 1792 book A Vindication of the Rights of Woman argued that women are not naturally inferior to men but appear so only for want of education, and called for women to be educated as rational beings entitled to equal civil and political standing. She also wrote on the French Revolution and on education more broadly. She died in 1797 of complications following childbirth, and her work became a foundational text for the later women's suffrage and feminist movements.
